New Parliament Building to be Built by December

The construction of the Federal Parliament Building, which is being built inside Singha Durbar, is set to be completed by next December.

The government has directed to expedite the remaining work of the new Parliament Building, which is 86 percent complete so far, so that it can be completed by December.

Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Urban Development Kulman Ghisingh on Friday issued instructions to start the meeting of the House of Representatives to be held after the general election, which has been announced to be held on Falgun 21, from a new building.

He held discussions with Urban Development Secretary Gopal Sigdel, the Special Building Construction Project and Coordination Office, project consultants, and construction businessmen on Friday.Since there has been no federal parliament building after 2064, the government has been using the International Conference Center in New Baneshwor as a federal parliament by renting it. After the recent protests, that building was vandalized and set on fire, and now there is no parliament building.

'After significant damage to the parliament building in Banshwar during the Janajati movement, the parliament building is no longer there. Therefore, the construction of the parliament building is a sensitive project. There should be no delays in this matter. All parties must be serious and fully involved to complete it ahead of time,' Minister Ghising said.A federal parliament building is being constructed on an area of 173 ropanis where the butterfly garden of Singhadurbar is located. Its cost exceeds 6 billion rupees.

A grand structure consisting of 12 blocks, including both houses of the federal parliament, the House of Representatives and the National Assembly, parliamentary committees, and the offices of parliamentary parties is under construction.The contract for the building construction was awarded to Tundi Sek Joint Venture. The contract agreement was made in October 2019 with the aim to complete the construction within three years.The extended contract's term will expire in January. The project has reported 86 percent physical progress.
