Danney Niroula: The Silent Maestro Behind 300+ Songs and a Lifelong Dedication to Nepali Music

By Ramesh Pandit ‘Tufan’

Nepali modern music has produced many artists who have risen to fame through the spotlight of popularity, while others have earned a lasting place in listeners’ hearts through dedication, creativity, and artistic excellence. Music composer Danney Niroula belongs to the latter category. His identity is found not in the noise of publicity but in the depth of his melodies. He speaks little, yet his compositions speak volumes. He may remain away from the limelight, but his music continues to resonate in the hearts of listeners.

Having composed music for more than 300 songs and received numerous national and institutional awards and honors, Danney has never limited his musical journey to professional achievements alone. For him, music is a way of life, a medium of emotional expression, and an invisible bridge connecting one soul to another. He regards music as a combination of art, science, knowledge, and continuous practice, believing that genuine musical excellence requires study, discipline, and creativity.

His compositions have reached audiences through the voices of established singers such as Deep Shrestha, Ram Krishna Dhakal, M. Baral, Rajesh Payal Rai, Uday-Manila Sotang, Pramod Kharel, Melina Rai, and singers from the younger generation, including child performers. Through collaborations with artists across generations, Danny has established a distinctive identity in Nepali modern music.

Danny began his informal musical journey in 1987 and entered the formal phase of his career in 1996. In 1998, he passed the vocal audition conducted by Radio Nepal. His achievements in national competitions and recognition from various institutions helped strengthen his position in the music industry.

Today, he is also creating opportunities for emerging talents through Saru Sangeet Ghar, established in memory of his late mother, Saraswati Niraula. Through this institution, he provides music training and organizes the Saru Sangeet National Award and Honors to recognize and encourage artistic talent.

In 2026, the Saru Sangeet National Award, accompanied by a cash prize of NPR 25,000, was presented to versatile singer Meera Rana, while folk-duet singer Kopila Gautam received the Special Artist Honor along with NPR 15,000. In 2025, the National Award was presented to folk singer Kabita Ale.

1. Musical Dreams Born in the Hills of Ilam

Ilam, a beautiful district in eastern Nepal, is renowned for its natural beauty, cultural richness, and traditional melodies. Its lush tea gardens, mist-covered hills, cascading waterfalls, and folk traditions create a distinctive atmosphere where nature and music seem inseparable.

It was in this picturesque setting that Danney Niroula was born on February 20, 1978, as the eldest son of singer Komal Niroula. His childhood in Namsaling, Ilam, became his first musical classroom.

The sound of flutes echoing through forests and hills, cultural programs at school, festival songs, traditional performances, and local folk melodies gradually awakened his interest in music.

His close connection with nature, the musical environment at home, and his early fascination with melodies helped shape his future. The musical seed planted in the soil of Ilam eventually grew into a lifelong commitment to Nepali modern music.

2. Family Heritage: The Foundation of His Musical Journey

To understand Danney Niroula's musical personality, it is essential to understand the influence of his family. His father, singer Komal Niroula, introduced him to music, discipline, and the importance of continuous practice. His late mother, Saraswati Niraula, provided affection, encouragement, and emotional strength.

Komal Niraula: His First Teacher and Inspiration

For Danney, Komal Niroula is not merely his father but also his first music teacher and lifelong guide. He taught Danny to play the harmonium, recognize musical notes, and develop the foundations of singing.

Komal Niroula's patriotic song, Akhand Shakti Hau Yuwa, featuring his lyrics and vocals, was recorded at Radio Nepal in 1969. The song, composed by Bhakta Raj Acharya, was selected at the Mechi Zone level for school performances. In 1984, another of his songs, Ke Sani Rahechhau Nani Timi, was also recorded at Radio Nepal.

The discipline, positive outlook, and musical values Danney inherited from his father helped him move forward despite the challenges of pursuing a career in music. He considers his father's guidance one of the most valuable foundations of his life.

A Musical Tribute to His Late Mother

The passing of his mother, Saraswati Niroula, left a profound emotional void in Danney's life. However, he chose to preserve her memory not only through personal remembrance but also through music and social contribution.

The establishment of Saru Sangeet Ghar in her memory represents his deep love and respect for her. Through music education, awards, and recognition of artists, he continues to connect his mother's name with the aspirations of a new generation.

The emotional depth found in devotional compositions and songs of sorrow and separation reflects the importance of family, love, and remembrance in his artistic journey. For Danney, music has become a meaningful way to keep his mother's memory alive.

Three Generations United by Music

Music is not limited to one generation in the Niroula family. Danney's sons, Shubham and Suyog Niraula, are studying music and vocal performance. His brother, Bhishan Niraula, is active as a lyricist, composer, and singer. Bhishan's daughter, Mijasi, has also demonstrated an early interest in singing.

His sister, Jhuma Niraula, is a singer who teaches music at several schools in the Kathmandu Valley. Her husband, Sabin Bhattarai, is also interested in lyrics and musical composition. Their children share an interest in music and singing.

Danney's wife, Sabita Nepal, has also provided consistent support throughout his musical journey.

From his father, Komal Niraula, to his children and nieces and nephews, the family's musical tradition continues to pass from one generation to the next.

3. The Journey to Kathmandu: Dreams, Struggles, and Classical Training

Driven by his growing passion for music, Danney eventually moved from Ilam to Kathmandu. At that time, learning music, meeting established musicians, and bringing original compositions to audiences were considerably more difficult than they are today.

Arriving in the capital with musical ambitions, he prioritized education, practice, and creative development. He studied music at Lalitkala Campus under Tribhuvan University, earning a bachelor's degree in music (B.Mus.).

His formal education gave him opportunities to study ragas, rhythm, musical theory, and the technical foundations of composition. The discipline of the guru-disciple tradition, combined with regular practice, helped transform his natural talent into a more refined musical ability.

His journey demonstrates that musical excellence is not based on talent alone; it also requires education, dedication, and discipline.

The Challenges of the Analog Era

The music industry Danney entered was very different from today's digital environment. Recording a song required extensive rehearsal, close coordination among instrumentalists, and careful attention to vocal accuracy and rhythm. Even a minor mistake could mean repeating a recording session.

During the cassette era, Radio Nepal and a limited number of FM stations were important channels for bringing songs to listeners. Social media, digital distribution, and accessible home-recording technology were not available in the way they are today.

Despite these limitations, Danney remained committed to music. The challenges strengthened his understanding of composition, arrangement, and the discipline required to produce quality recordings.

4. From Albums to Memorable Songs: A Diverse Creative Journey

Danney Niroula's musical career includes albums and compositions covering a variety of emotions, styles, and themes. Some of his notable albums include:

  • Anjali (2002): His first official album, which helped establish his identity as a music composer.

  • Balkusum (2004): An album featuring songs inspired by children's experiences and psychology.

  • Bhakti Sarovar (2012): A devotional album expressing spirituality, reverence, and emotional depth.

  • Hira: Another notable work in his musical repertoire.

These albums demonstrate that Danny's creative interests extend beyond a single genre. From children's songs and romantic melodies to modern Nepali music and devotional compositions, he has explored a wide range of themes.

Danny's compositions have reached audiences through the voices of numerous singers. Songs associated with his musical career include Ma Jiundo Laash, Dherai Dherai Lamo Katha, Phool Dinchhu Bhantheu, Lali Hundo Rahechha Maya, and Kahilyai Din Kahilyai Raat.

The song Bhukampalai Chhekne Ghar features the voices of Prashna Shakya, Kopila Gautam, Bishwo Nepali, Danny Niraula, and Bimal Gautam.

These songs illustrate the breadth of Danney's collaborations and his connection with singers from different generations. With more than 300 songs to his credit, each composition represents a different story, emotion, and musical experience.

5. An Unexpected Turning Point: His Meeting with Dibya Khaling

One memorable incident in Danney Niraula's musical journey demonstrates how an apparent setback can lead to an unexpected opportunity.

In 1998, Danney participated in Brighter Timro Sur Mero Geet, a reality program broadcast by Nepal Television. Music composer Dibya Khaling was among the judges, but Danney was not selected in the competition.

After watching the program on television, however, Khaling contacted Danney through mutual acquaintances. He reportedly told him, “Danney! Now you have to work with me.”

This encounter opened the door to collaboration. Danny gained opportunities to work with Khaling, learn from his experience, and develop a deeper understanding of music.

What began as a disappointment in a competition eventually became the starting point of a valuable professional relationship.

The episode illustrates an important lesson: success does not always follow the path one initially expects. Sometimes, an unsuccessful attempt becomes the beginning of a much greater opportunity.

6. Awards and Recognition: Acknowledging Years of Dedication

Danney Niraula has received various national and institutional awards in recognition of his contribution to music.

  • Certificate of honor from Galaxy English School, 2025.

His achievements also include a certificate associated with Guinness World Records in 2014 for composing music for a film directed by what was described as the world's youngest film director. The specific record and certificate details should be verified against the official documentation.

Among his early achievements, Danny secured second place in a children's song competition held on September 20, 1987, received an encouragement award in a singing competition organized by the Employees' Meeting Center in Ilam in 1994, and won third place in an inter-secondary-school singing competition organized by the District Education Office in Ilam in 1995.

Although awards and certificates are important milestones, Danny considers the emotional response of listeners, the blessings of music lovers, and the progress of his students among the most meaningful rewards of his career.

7. Saru Sangeet Ghar: From a Mother's Memory to a School for New Talent

Believing that musical knowledge should be shared rather than kept to oneself, Danny established Saru Sangeet Ghar in Sanagaun, Lalitpur.

The institution's name carries the memory and affection associated with his late mother, Saraswati Niraula. More than a music-training center, it serves as a place where aspiring artists can discover their abilities, develop their skills, and gain confidence through practice.

Children, adults, and senior citizens attend classes at the institution. Training is provided in singing, instrumental performance, and different aspects of music.

Helping Students Become Singers

Local residents Prakash Khadka and Sahara Bhattarai from Tikathali have been practicing music at Saru Sangeet Ghar for approximately two years. Initially attracted by a general interest in music, they have progressed to recording and releasing songs.

Their work includes two yoga-related songs and two romantic songs released to the public.

Similarly, Saraswati Maharjan, a Newari devotional singer from Siddhipur, has expressed satisfaction with the institution's teaching approach, describing the learning process as accessible and effective.

These experiences demonstrate how structured training and consistent practice can help emerging artists develop their potential.

For Danney, teaching music is not merely a professional responsibility. It is also a contribution to the future of Nepali music.

Through Saru Sangeet Ghar, he continues to honor his mother's memory while creating opportunities for new generations of musicians.

8. Nepali Music in Transition: Danny's Perspective

Nepali music has evolved through several generations. Legendary artists such as Narayan Gopal, Ambar Gurung, Gopal Yonjan, and Natikaji laid important foundations for the development of Nepali modern music.

Inspired by this rich musical heritage, Danny believes that the strength of Nepali music lies in its traditional melodies, lyrical depth, rhythmic beauty, and emotional authenticity.

He believes artists can learn from international musical styles and embrace new technology without abandoning their own cultural identity.

Technology Is a Tool, Not a Substitute for Practice

The time and effort required to record music have changed dramatically. Digital software, modern recording equipment, and online distribution have made music production more accessible than ever before.

Danney welcomes these developments. However, he believes technology should support artistic practice rather than replace it.

Technology can refine a vocal recording and simplify musical arrangement, but it cannot independently create the emotional depth, originality, and sensitivity that distinguish meaningful music. These qualities require the artist's dedication, understanding, and continuous practice.

Today, popularity in the music industry is often measured through YouTube views, TikTok trends, and social media engagement. These platforms have created valuable opportunities for new artists, but they have also introduced challenges in evaluating long-term artistic quality.

Danney remains committed to continuous practice and meaningful composition. In his view, popularity may be temporary, but music that carries genuine emotion can remain in listeners' hearts for years.

Connecting With Audiences Through Digital Platforms

Danney is also active in the digital music environment. His musical activities and training initiatives can be explored through the Saru Sangit Ghar YouTube channel. He is also present on Facebook under the name Danney Niroula.

Through these channels, he shares his singing, music education, and ongoing creative activities with audiences.

9. Lessons for the New Generation of Musicians

Danney Niroula's musical journey offers valuable lessons for aspiring composers, singers, and music enthusiasts.

Practice has no substitute. Talent alone is not enough to achieve excellence in music. Regular practice, education, patience, and discipline are essential. Danny's journey demonstrates that lasting achievements are built through years of effort.

Preserve originality. Learning international styles is valuable, but protecting Nepali folk traditions, lyrical beauty, and the distinctive character of Nepali modern music is equally important.

Failure is not the end. His unexpected encounter with Dibya Khaling illustrates that failing to secure one opportunity does not close every door. Patience and perseverance can lead to new possibilities.

Sharing knowledge sustains musical traditions. Through Saru Sangeet Ghar, Danny is helping pass musical knowledge to younger generations. Teaching others ensures that musical traditions continue to grow and evolve.

Quality matters more than temporary popularity. Social media attention can provide visibility, but creating music that stands the test of time should remain a long-term goal for every serious artist.

10. Conclusion: A Dedicated Musician Whose Melodies Endure

Danney Niroula's musical journey began in Namsaling, Ilam, and has expanded through years of study, composition, collaboration, and teaching at Saru Sangeet Ghar in Sanagaun, Lalitpur.

The musical values he inherited from his father, Komal Niraula, the enduring memory of his late mother, Saraswati Niraula, his formal education, and his commitment to continuous practice have shaped his artistic identity.

Composing more than 300 songs, collaborating with singers from different generations, receiving national and institutional recognition, and training aspiring musicians are important milestones in his career.

Yet Danney's identity extends beyond that of a music composer. He is also a dedicated practitioner, teacher, guardian of a family musical tradition, and source of inspiration for emerging talent.

By prioritizing creativity and practice over the race for publicity, he reminds us of the enduring value of quiet dedication in the arts.

The glitter of temporary popularity may fade, but melodies born from genuine emotion, originality, and years of practice can remain alive in the hearts of listeners. Danny Niraula's musical journey stands as an example of this creative continuity.

May his commitment to preserving the dignity of Nepali modern music grow stronger, may Saru Sangeet Ghar nurture many more talented artists, and may his contribution to Nepali music continue to inspire generations to come.
